Musicians... Are you wondering why your fans have stopped liking your posts? Well don't feel too bad. The musician community is experiencing a lack of engagement from our fans, but this is because Facebook is limiting our post views in your news feed. In 2015, you'll need info like this in terms of how to engage with your fan base better. My name is Jaxx Sessions, president of Live On Analog Records. I've been a musician for over 20 years and I've been marketing and advertising for over 10 years now so I am quite familiar with changes in social media marketing. In the Facebook Help Center, you'll find some great info on how the news feed works. Throughout the years, Facebook has changed the way their users see content on a news feed. It seems recently, a lot of artists are talking about this issue. It is called "Organic Reach" which is the number of people who see your posts. Facebook defines it as "The total number of unique people who were shown your post through unpaid distribution “Facebook uses a word called an "Algorithm" to determine what users see in their news feed. This means if you post something that isn't interesting enough for people to like, comment or share, your post is basically thrown in the trash where only 1% of your fans might see it. Here is a few posting tips to help you in 2015
- PROMOTING WITHOUT VALUE:
This is actually considered one of the "7 Deadly Sins A Musician can make", showcased in a CD Baby Blog. If you are posting just to keep your name on the news feed, don't. Its annoying to users and they are like a gunslinger waiting to press that ignore button. Try and limit your posts that are not related to your music like "I’m feeling hungry" or "go lakers". You have fans and friends that want to know about your career in music, not how you feel about politics or your deep personal issues.
- POSTING FOR GIGS:
So you have a great show in 3 weeks? Here's a basic plan. Formulate a strategic plan that will peak interests of your fans once a week leading up to the gig. Maybe do a press release the first week. In the press release, talk about your career in music, keep it interesting and plug the gig you have coming up. Build your credibility the second week and Showcase a new song or video. Make sure you have promo credits on the video and plug interesting things that make your fans engage. The third week post a teaser video and do your invites on a personal level. It may take some time messaging your fans personally, but you'll see more engagement in your posts and you'll increase news feed credibility.
Here is an example of a teaser video we created for Logan Coats.
Here are the stats on our post:
Since Logan is the featured artist for our upcoming monthly event “Songwriters Jam”, we wanted to hype him up a bit before the show. We got some great engagement. 800+ people saw his post and 50 people clicked on it to engage, not to mention some likes and a few Shares. Keep your posts interesting and bring more valuable content to your fan base.

- GOOD CONTENT POSTS:
The more engagement your post attracts, the more it will stay in a news feed on Facebook, so your goal should be to post something interesting that will gain likes, comments & shares. Heck... Post a little drama to stir the pot, but keep it fun, related to your music and always keep it PG13. Challenge people engage with your posts. Maybe your late for an interview with a magazine, but you've run out of gas like two blocks away... Create a buzz. When you're people start sharing and commenting, make sure your engaging with your fans on the posts. They appreciate that.
This blog could be an interesting post if you've read this far. Right now you might be thinking:
"Live On Analog Records is a great record label because they care enough to write this blog to help artists like you have better success in your future posts"
- THE POSITIVE NOTE
Although this blog may appear to be negative, its really not. This news feed policy can be a benifit for the hardworking musician. It will challege us to be more personable with our fan bases. Take a few artists under your wing and develop a street team, "everyone always deserves a hand up". They want you to succeed and they might just help you out if you give them what they want. Great content...
This blog is for real musicians looking for informative tips to help promote themselves. Feel free to share this blog with your music friends. It just might help them post more efficiently.
